2009 - Then

2021 - Now

Where does the time go?

The first photo was a practice session I did with my friend in my basement.
The second photo is my Daughter, she's 14 now, but was only 3 when the first picture was taken.
A lot has changed in the world since then, including my style and experience.
My equipment has been upgraded, including my cameras and lenses.
My editing software has been upgraded.
My computer that I use for editing is the fastest computer I have ever owned.

One thing that hasnt changed at all is how much I enjoy doing photography!
I honestly thought one day I'd grow tired of it and I'd give it up.
Thats not the case though!
I have an established business with loyal customers and I learn something new every day still!
I found this old blog of mine today and thought that showing the growth I have experienced since 2009 would be a good way to bridge the gap from my old posts.

Happy Wednesday!

Want to know what it's like to be a work at home mom?

Well read on then!

I have set up an office in the basement (which means I pushed a desk up against a wall and set up shop).  The floor is FREEZING (tile on cement) and I sit here every morning from 8am - noon editing pictures.  4 hours per day! So you may think its a lot of money for some services but I'll tell you there is a lot of behind the scenes work going on.  I have 2 projects going on right now, so thats about 1600 photos I am working on right now.  And I want to complete them all in 2 weeks.

And I have my son (almost 2) who plays around me.  He wanders the house (cant open doors so I close the areas off he shouldnt be in.  He can get into his room, the girl's room and the living room, wwhere treehouse is on all morning), but eventually always ends up dragging toys into the room I am at and playing around me, grabbing at me, poking me, needing snacks, diapers, drinks, attention.  So we sing while I work, I say what I am typing out loud to him in a animated voice.  I take.lots of breaks to play a bit.

At noon I close up shop in the basement.  I go up and my head is still in work and my brain is spinning. And I think out loud while I make lunch and we eat.  I think and think and try to write everything down, cause I dont want to lose my thoughts and ideas!

Nap time is after lunch, but he's getting to the age where he's not napping.  But I put him in his crib anyhow, cause now I have to clean.  Dishes from breakfast, and lunch, laundry, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, toilets, wiping, and thinking about business the whole time.  And trying not to lose the good thoughts and ideas.

When thats done, I'll get my son if he's not asleep by now (cleaning only takes about an hour and then I give up, or have such a good idea I have to research it) and then I am ready  for marketing.  I have been thinking about it all day and I am READY.  Some days (like today) I cant wait and it cuts into my editing, but I make up for it another time.

So I spend from about 1:30 till 4:00 pm reading, researching, returning email, contacting people, blogging, fbing, tweeting, linkedining, all of it.  I stop to pee and change the laundry.

At 4 my 2 other kids come home and I have to plan dinner, or drive them places or whatever it is we have going on.  Things settle again around 7pm (bedtime for the younger 2) and now I am working on seeing the results of my afternoon work and morning work - feedback from clients, inquiries, replies to posts, etc etc etc... and I interact with them till I cant stay awake any longer (I usually pooch out around 11pm).  I go to sleep, get up at 6:30, spend 30 minutes with Calvin then start all over again....

This is what I do every day.

Some of you might think this sounds very unappealing!  But its not.  This morning I screwed around with my son and we did pictures.  I needed to fix some settings on my camera and people wanted to see his new 'do' and we had fun taking some pictures:

So, I got my settings figured out 100% where I wanted them and he got some mom time.  So its not all boring, and I have to get creative with how I do things to incorporate mommy time and work time together, but in the end I enjoy my days!

Sisters

My first family session of the year was completed this weekend.

I spent an hour with two girls.  They showed me their cat, their play room, their bedroom and their favorite toys. We played, we laughed and we danced.  Here are my favorite shots from the day:
